The Nation of Islam

The Nation of Islam is a political and religious organization that encourages black nationalism in the name of Allah, under the religion of Islam. The Nation of Islam is known as a religion, empowerment organization, new religious movement, or black nationalist or separatist group, depending on the speaker and audience.  Its stated goals are to improve the spiritual, mental, social, and economic condition of African Americans in the United States and all of humanity.  The NOI was founded in Detroit on July 4, 1930, by Wallace D. Fard. The Nation of Islam is blatantly anti-Semitic, teaching that, originally, humanity was exclusively black, but then Yakub, Jacob, created the white race using eugenics. Wallace Muhammad taught that this “new” white race was to be considered devils because of how they were created.

Wallace Muhammad mysteriously disappeared, and Elijah Muhammad took his place. Elijah Muhammad taught that black people were descended from the ancient tribe of Shabazz that had originally settled the holy city of Mecca and that black and white people can share no real community. Malcolm X was his closest collaborator until a quarrel between the two men in 1964. Malcolm X then went on a pilgrimage to Mecca, where he saw people of every race worshiping side by side. He became convinced of the hopelessness of racism. He returned to the United States and founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity, which preached black nationalism but not black separatism. He was shot and killed while speaking to a large gathering in New York City in 1965. After Elijah Muhammad’s death in 1975, his son Warith Deen Muhammad radically transformed the Black Muslim movement, opening it to whites and renaming it the American Muslim Mission. In 1979, Louis Farrakhan broke away from the Mission, establishing the more radical Nation of Islam, which restricts membership to blacks, and advocates a separate black social structure.
